Summary of talk

Observing the techniques of a painter, the work composition, the painting construction and resulting in the overall conditions are fundamental in deciding an appropriate course in conservation.

Armed with these observations and the resulting understanding, a conservator can then decide on the approach in executing the task – whether to handle the situation without drastic interventions first or otherwise where other more intensive measures are used.

The speaker will lead audiences through the following 2 optical journeys to illustrate what he means by “the Basic techniques and observations” required.

1st: Transition of Western Painting TechniquesFrom van Eyck to impressionists.

2nd: Painting Research by optical survey.
