“How you look at body and skin is all a matter of perspective. Some think of it as the body’s major organ. Others look at skin as a biological map of the history of human migration patterns. Many people like it pretty but to me, it’s an art to tell my story.”
Every body tells a story is a new phrase and a new phase in Liu Gang’s highly detailed realism portraits. The human mind and physical body are sculpted and conditioned through time and space. As a result, a human agency is created. Social realism makes our real embodied selves a burden in the load-bearing world. A statement of personal history is thus reflected upon one’s body.
The meticulously painted cropped figures in the portraits subject to permanence and presence of a genuine personality. The artist welcomes viewers into an intimate relationship with each body and engage in an unspoken dialogue.
Liu Gang was born in 1984 in Heilongjiang Province, Jixi, China. In 2008, he graduated with Bachelor degree from Luxun Fine Arts Academy and was awarded scholarship during school period. His work has been widely exhibited internationally in solo and group exhibitions.
