LESLIE LOW 刘俊廷 (b. 1993, Singapore)

Selected works

Biography

B. 1993, Leslie Low graduated with a degree in Fine Arts from LASALLE College of the Arts. He worked primarily as a commission artist specializing in portraiture before embarking on this new direction. His current work and painting style is heavily influenced by western contemporary realists and Zen practices.

Artist statement:

This new series of works are heavily influenced by Ikebana and Western Contemporary Realism. They depict a power play between realism and abstraction in contemporary art.

Plants are chosen as the main subject to serve as an intelligent force negotiating a balance between both factions. Naturally, they’re also meant to symbolize life and decay, while uncommonly, aggression and passivity due to their ability of enduring harsh environments while simultaneously bending to external forces with frailty.

Guised as a love letter to the “Institution”, Dear Art embodies the confusion of a young artist desperate for direction. The works serve as a warzone where elements from both sides collide while blending harmoniously as a unified image. They question whether realism and abstraction are meant to be opposing extremes on a scale or if both are existing in consequence of each other in the process of creation.
